This is the quintessential antique French Quarter bistro: a long, white-tiled space lit as
bright as a bathroom, mirrored walls and tuxedoed waiters who've been around nearly as
long as the brass-fitted ceiling fans. True to its quirky nature, Galatoire's accepts no
reservations and often has a line of hopeful diners (plastic cups of booze in hand)
snaking down the block. On Fridays at lunch, local society types come to gossip and
table-hop, drawing out their meals into three- and four-hour debauches.
The mood is always transcendently gay here ("I'm late to Galatoire's. Life lasts
forever," goes a line in an Ellen Gilchrist poem). The classic French-Creole dishes
haven't changed in a century, and they're still terrific an antidote to the overly
tricked-up fusion food rampant in our era. (reviewer unknown)
